Mount Barker’s Growth

With a population of 80,501 in 2020, Mount Barker is expected to grow to a population of 108,291 in 2041. As this beautiful region becomes more popular with homebuyers in South Australia there are plenty of exciting plans to bring cutting-edge new services to this historic township.

Almost 600 new bus trips a week have made commuting between Adelaide and Mount Barker quicker and easier.

New Bus Services

Since January 2024, almost 600 new bus trips a week have made commuting between Adelaide and Mount Barker quicker and easier! 36 new bus services are operating between Mount Barker and the city during the week, and in February 26 new bus services were also introduced on Sundays. These new bus services are part of a $19 million commitment by the State government to meet demand for bus services as Mount Barker grows, and fifteen new hybrid-diesel buses are expected to join the fleet this year offering quieter and more comfortable travel for freeway commuters.

Redevelopments at the Mount Barker Hospital are fantastic for young families moving to the region.

Hospital Developments

Just six minutes away from Aston Hills, the Mount Barker Hospital is currently undergoing a $320.8 million redevelopment. Fantastic for young families moving to Mount Barker, this development includes new maternity and paediatric facilities alongside new rehab and surgery capabilities. The new development will see the hospital:

  • Triple inpatient capacity from 34 to 102 beds,
  • Expand capacity across maternity, paediatrics, rehabilitation, surgery and palliative care,
  • Deliver new operation theatres and post-surgery recovery beds,
  • Expand chemotherapy and renal dialysis services,
  • Provide new outpatient, community and allied health facilities, including consulting suites, plus a health gymnasium and telehealth services,
  • Allow for onsite dispensing pharmacies and pathology laboratories,
  • Establish a new 12-bed mental health unit.

Mount Barker’s new Regional Aquatic Centre is located just across the road from Aston Hills.

New Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Work is currently underway on Mount Barker’s new $51.8 million Regional Indoor Aquatic and Leisure Centre! Located just across the road from Aston Hills, adjacent to the Summit Sport and Recreation Park, this new facility will be within walking distance to all new homes at Aston Hills.

This exciting new leisure facility will include four pools, a warm water therapy pool and a 25m, 10-lane competition capable lap pool plus a gym, fitness rooms, a cafe and community rooms. For updates and more information on this development, visit the Mount Barker District Council’s website here.
